Supreme Martial Arts UWS : The sheer number of martial arts may surprise you. If you or your child are considering learning a martial art, then this can leave you feeling overwhelmed. So, which martial art should you choose, and how many martial arts are there?

 

There are more than 170 martial arts. You will have heard of some, such as karate, Jiu-Jitsu, and Taekwondo, while others are rare or less popular. Martial arts come from different regions around the world, with many originating from China, Japan, and Korea. Often, they were as a result of historical events, which further nurtured philosophies and techniques.

 

Some focus on grappling, throws, chokeholds, and joint locks. While others concentrate on leg techniques, and others still focus on open-handed strikes. These are all things to consider when picking a martial art to learn.

 

The most popular martial arts

 

  • Aikido – from Japan, this style is about redirecting the strikes of an attacker with joint locks, throws, and Japanese weapons
  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu – grappling and ground fighting are the main things you will learn. However, stikes help move the action to the ground.
  • Chun Kuk Do – interestingly, the creator of this American-Korean hybrid style is TV and movie star, Chuck Norris
  • Jeet Kune Do – this is the system of Bruce Lee, one of the most iconic martial arts stars
  • Judo – a sport consisting of Japanese throws, joint locks, and grappling
  • Jujutsu – a Japanese art that teaches you to manipulate the power of the attacker
  • Karate – more than one hundred million people the globe practice karate. You will master hand, elbow, and knee strikes, as well as kicks. There are several styles, but Shotokan has become the most popular. Further styles include Goju-Ryu, Isshin-Ryu, Kyokushin, Shito-Ryu, Shorin-Ryu, and Wado-Ryu.
  • Kendo – a sword fighting art
  • Kickboxing – power kicks and punches are prominent
  • Kung Fu – this Chinese martial art has ten styles. These often have the name of animals, such as Monkey Kung Fu and Praying Mantis Kung Fu.

  • Muay Thai – from Thailand, this martial art adds elbows and knees, which are not part of kickboxing
  • Ninjutsu – the style of the Japanese ninja (assassins and spies) 
  • Sambo – this Russian martial art has two forms. So, you will be learning Sports Sambo or Combat Sambo
  • Sumo – Japanese wrestling
  • Taekwondo – from Korean, you learn blocks, strikes, kicks, and punches
  • Tai Chi – known as the “gentle martial art” because you practice techniques in slow motion. This martial art is good for reducing stress and improving balance and health.
