Fitness UES : Setting and achieving goals is an excellent way of teaching your children how to succeed. Studies prove that a large proportion of people don’t achieve their goals. One of the reasons for this is not knowing how to set them effectively. A long-term goal can be challenging to maintain focus on, especially for young children. Here we explore the best ways of setting long-term goals with your child.

Goal setting with kids

It can be common for kids not to have an interest in setting goals. They may have an idea of something they want but don’t know how to set the path for getting it. You can help them with the process by making it fun and exciting. Firstly, talk to your child about their dreams and hopes. They may have a long list of things they want to do but won’t know how to do it. In karate, they may want to achieve a certain belt rank or perfect a move. Once they can start to identify these things, you will be able to create an action plan.

Asking them questions such as, what would you be proud to achieve, will help them really think about goals. Some tips for setting goals with kids include:

  • Let them set their own big goal
  • Identify the reason they want to go for this achievement
  • Break it down into smaller steps
  • Help them plan for potential obstacles

Helping your kid understand the reasons behind a chosen goal helps them get into the mindset of aiming for it. When they can establish what is drawing them to it, they are more likely to stick to it. Try to allow them to figure out their own goals instead of something you want them to do if they have a genuine feeling of wanting so the motivation and drive will remain.

A long-term goal can seem like a huge task, especially for young children. So breaking it down into smaller steps make it much easier to handle. Your child will be able to see how they are progressing to the big aim. Celebrate each of those little successes with them. Focus on how they are improving and teach them to talk positively about themselves.

It is also a good idea to talk about anything that might be a potential obstacle to their success. Are there some bad habits that often make them give up on an activity? Can they sometimes be prone to negative talk or self-doubt? Talking about these and understanding them helps your child to spot potential problems before they occur

Why goal-setting is essential for children

Achieving goals has many benefits and is a superb way to help your child succeed in life. Learning to set and aim for specific purposes is excellent for kids because of it:

  • Increases self-esteem
  • Helps with focus
  • Boosts self-confidence
  • Becomes a life-long habit
  • Helps them to become empowered
  • Teaches responsibility

In kid’s karate classes we will constantly set goals so your child will begin to learn this naturally. We help them to identify, plan and achieve their aims in karate. As a consequence, this helps them to do the same in other activities. Fitness UES
